Compensation For Facial Lumps From Dermal Filler
Case Study - Adverse Reaction To Dermal Filler
Our client, Mrs R, booked a dermal filler treatment with the intention of smoothing out fine lines and crows’ feet around her eyes, at a new beauty salon that had opened up near to where she lived. The appointment was made in early 2010, shortly after the salon had begun using a new dermal filler product, Novabel, derived from natural marine algae extract. Mrs R’s eyes were irritated, red and sore following the treatment, and the next day appeared bruised and swollen. She soon afterwards developed lumps under each eye, which a doctor later confirmed as foreign body granulomas, resulting from an inflammatory reaction to the Novabel dermal filler product.
Our Legal Advice
Mrs R’s symptoms persisted for the next 6 months, causing her distress and embarrassment for an extended period. Novabel dermal filler was temporarily withdrawn from the market a few months after its release, due to a number of reports of the product causing adverse reactions. We later represented Mrs R in a compensation claim against the manufacturers of Novabel dermal filler, and obtained a medical report on her behalf, stating categorically that she had suffered an adverse reaction to ingredients in the filler product. The manufacturer had been negligent in supplying a product that was clearly dangerous, and following an admission of liability from the manufacturer’s insurers, Mrs R received a cheque for £3,750 in personal injury compensation.
